The challenge for WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Providers) is to offer a fast, reliable service while keeping the cost of the CPE (customer premise equipment) to a minimum. This is where WiFi dominates. The CPE costs while using WiFi can be less than $200 Cdn.
The principle is identical to offering wireless hotspot access in a coffee shop. But by using higher gain outdoor antennas, a fixed point-to-multipoint system can be setup that will cover a 6km radius (line of sight) and in many cases a 1.5km radius (non-line of sight) through houses and trees.
